Domestic archaeology aims to discover a sense of our collective yet diverse identities through the excavation of the domestic space and its artefacts. Interiors and the objects in them are a common ground of experience for us all - their occupants, objects, and events provoking their own memories, narratives and associations. Taking these ideas a step further, I introduce elements which archaeologists would find impossible to discover from their data retrieval of materials, or interpret from the known history and documentation of the inhabitants. I use domestic objects in artworks, not only to reveal their socio/cultural/environmental origins, but also the thoughts, dreams, likes, dislikes, history, and character of the persons associated with them - a composite personal narrative for future archaeologists. By doing so, I also reveal the common identities and shared experiences of home-life. My latest works are about one of those shared experiences in the home – life’s “to do” lists and how you prioritise and balance the needs of your home, your family and you self. I interpret my ideas in form and material with familiar objects and work from a personal viewpoint, the narratives of daily life being essentially universal in meaning.
