TIME AND TIME AGAIN,
SHADOW HUNT
Pliny The Elder's Myth of the Origin of Western Art, and Plato's Myth of the Cave, dealing with obscurity as ignorance and light as knowledge, both employ the image of the cast shadow. Imbued in these myths lie hermeneutic keys for symbols in Western representation and psyche.
I am embroiled with questions of truth as an absolute and personal reality, particularly in relation to time and impermanence. Answers are as elusive as shadows, and so I find myself drawn to shadows for their much underrated symbolism and forgotten conotations. Shadow and time are my current medium to illustrate questions of impermanence and perception of the ego, truth and mystery. Where do our shadows go when it is dark? Where do our memories go once the moment is over?
Time And Time Again
This is a performance/site specific artwork on the ground within George Inn Pend, which leads from the Crossgate to Bonnygate Carpark. The work will evolve over the period of the Festival. Shadow lines of the adjacent buildings and the sun are thrown unto the ground and then drawn and redrawn time and time again to highlight the movement of the sun creating a tideline-like image alluding to impermanence.
Shadow Hunt
Shadow Hunt is an interactive artwork, inviting the passer-by to capture his or her own shadow on the walls of Bobber Wynd (entrance on St Catherine St). These tracings will culminate in a history of unique visual echoes, marking a specific and personal event, whilst creating a seemingly abstract artwork.
