BUILDING MACHINE

Building Machines are projects based around specific buildings. I produce drawings of the building, which are then sourced to artists and musicians, who use them to create audio. This is then played in the spaces the drawings were done from. Prints are subsequently produced, and the completed work exhibited, a drawing created of the exhibition space used to mix the audio.

The drawings are explorations, and extemporizations on and of the spaces, and as such are to be seen as directions of activities and sounds in relation to each individual space. There are no absolute instructions in these drawings, but they are to be used as origins for directed improvisation, performance or the creation of a sound piece. The intention is that the performer should be specific, and consistent in his or her actions toward the drawing and be sensitive to the area of the building they are performing in. This performance would both take place and be recorded in the space the drawing came from.

Process is very important to this work. The drawings go through many processes; the varying approaches of the performers as they re-represent the drawings; the final mix into one audio piece and the re-creation of the drawings into lithographic prints by myself as "producer" - the piece produced is of something which is neither audio nor visual, but unites both to an equal
degree in a final form.

I use sound in this work to explore and express ideas and concepts of space, of being, and of presence. I use my origin as a visual artist to build a metaphorical structure of buildings through the use of sound. I see the work as a study of the animate nature of a building, creating a "fingerprint".

I will produce a Building Machine in Cupar, for the 2009 Cupar Arts Festival, at the old St Columba's School.
