SULLIVAN / SKULINA
THANK YOU FOR A LOVELY TIME

This is the first collaborative project between Dundee-based artist, Jill Skulina and Cupar artist, Cherie Sullivan.

Venturing into new territory, Cherie anticipates the challenge of taking her painting away from the context of the canvas to work on the surrounding "walls" of the installation, creaing a scene of poppies, sweet peas and vines, which will hold significance to the overall work.

Jill normally works three-dimensionally, and will make dolls which represent the characters of the narrative.

The concept behind the work is Jill’s interest in fairytales, particularly Giambattista Basile’s 17th century version of Sleeping Beauty: Sun, Moon and Talia. In the story Talia is not awoken by a kiss but by one of her children sucking the splinter from her finger. In Basile’s version the Prince is a married King who finds Talia asleep and gathers “the first fruits of love”. Nine months later she has twins, which are then looked after by two fairies until she is awoken.

Jill and Cherie will create an installation in response to this interpretation of a well-known fairy-tale. Both artists went to high school in Cupar and the work, in part, represents the transition that happens in those teenage years when you make the transition from childhood to womanhood.
